Introduction
About the Course
Background of New Thought explores the origin and development of the ideas, beliefs, and theories that characterize the New Thought movement. The course also looks at the expression of those ideas, beliefs, and theories in the various New Thought religions, and briefly examines the work of some of the more notable New Thought writers and teachers. Finally, Background of New Thought investigates the most recent developments in the unfoldment of the New Thought movement. |

Learning Objectives
On completion of the course, students
will be able to:
- Offer a definition of New Thought, what it is and what it is not.
- Identify some of the key figures in the development of the New Thought movement and briefly describe their contributions to New Thought.
- Identify some of the key similarities and differences among New Thought, Unity, and Christian Science.
- Identify the major New Thought religions and their most significant teachings.
- Discuss some of the recent developments in New Thought.

Requirements for Learners
Complete Assigned Readings
The reading assignments will not be lengthy. However, the nature of the material requires careful reading and reflection. Reading about related topics in the recommended texts will enhance your understanding of the material but is not required.
Participate in Online Discussion
Several questions will be posted in the discussion forum each week. Students are asked to post a response to discussion questions and to respond to other students’ postings as they feel inspired. The number of questions you are required to respond to will be noted each week but will never exceed two questions. You may answer as many questions as you wish. Questions where everyones response is expected will be marked Required.
Periodic Online Exams
The exams will explore your knowledge of the metaphysical terminology used in the assigned reading. Exams will be posted, completed online, and automatically graded. |

Grading
As is the case with all SEE courses, evaluation for Background of New Thought will be based on a Credit/No Credit system. To successfully complete Background of New Thought, students must participate in each week’s Discussion Forum.
A grade of “incomplete” will be assigned for any students who do not sufficiently
participate in the discussion, and additional assignments will be required to
remove the incomplete grade. When approved, students will be awarded 10 required
Spiritual Education and Enrichment credits. The registrar’s office will mail
written notification. |
