at Unity Village
The title for these retreats is taken from the Book of Nehemiah in the Old Testament. Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in the fifth century B.C.E. and, in the process, restored the Jewish people’s faith in God.
Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem symbolizes what we seek to accomplish here at Unity Village. Through the Nehemiah Retreats, Unity intends to:
- Convene a caring, like-minded community of volunteers for the purpose of rebuilding and restoring the sacred grounds of Unity Village.
- Provide retreat guests with opportunities for personal spiritual renewal and growth.
Guests will arrive on a Sunday afternoon and depart Friday. The main part of each day will consist of restoration and construction work. Morning and evening programs will provide time for fellowship and spiritual renewal. The retreat will close on Thursday evening with a celebratory banquet.
Each retreat will have different work projects, and some projects will require specific skills. This information will be provided beforehand to ensure that each volunteer is able to attend the retreat that most closely fits his/her skill level and physical strength.
We will have an open application/registration process for the retreat. Volunteers should select the retreat that best fits their own capacities and skills. Retreats will be limited to a specific number of guests determined by the types of projects to be undertaken during each retreat.
Every retreat will have a different focus and work project. Projects may vary from rebuilding stone walls to painting restrooms. Unity’s Facilities Department will coordinate, organize and supervise each work project.
No. All necessary tools required to accomplish the work will be provided by Unity. However, each guest will need to provide his/her own leather work gloves, eye protection, appropriate work shoes and personal first-aid kit (to manage blisters, bug bites, and minor cuts and bruises). If other first-aid needs should arise, Unity has trained first-aid personnel on grounds for assistance.
Unity recognizes the unique and special gift that each retreat guest will bring and give to a Nehemiah Retreat and to Unity. We also recognize and honor the law of giving and receiving.
As a result, Unity will provide each retreat guest with complimentary room and board for the week.
Lodging will be at the Unity Motel, and all meals will be at Unity Inn. If a guest would like to upgrade accommodations to the Spiritual Life Center, the standard room rate will apply.
If you are unable to participate in a Nehemiah Retreat but would like to support the program, we welcome and appreciate your love offerings. Donations will be used to offset the cost of building materials and other retreat expenses.
